Hey! I'm Millie, an English translator based in Belgium. Welcome to my portfolio, where I showcase some of the work I am most proud of and really enjoyed doing. So, what can I do for you? I help purpose-driven brands communicate authentically in English through detail-oriented translation that truly captures their voice. I work from French and Spanish into English, my native language, and I both translate texts and subtitle videos. I can also carry out English proofreading and provide guidance on AI use to help you find the balance between efficiency and accuracy.

My Specialisations

Marketing

Marketing translation has formed the bulk of my translation work for several years now. I love getting into a brand's tone of voice and translating texts that speak directly to customers. Humour, wordplay and creative phrasing are the biggest challenges but also the most satisfying wins in this kind of text.

Sustainability

I am passionate about the environment and I love working for brands and causes that help the planet. It is important to me that any sustainable messaging is preserved in translations so the audience can understand the brand's mission.

Fashion

I am a home seamstress and have been making clothes myself since I was a child. This means I know about different materials and stitches and how a garment is made. I'll make sure your fashion texts don't get lost in translation.

Hotel Helvie website

French to English translation

Website: Hotel Helvie

Source text

While translating this website, it was important to keep the heart and enticing nature of the source text. The main challenge was some particularly 'French' phrasing that needed reworking to flow naturally in English, for example, "elle vous invite à profiter des moments de lâcher-prise". While "moments" in this sense is common in French, it isn't something an English audience would read as natural, which is why I translated it as "it's a place to let go".

Translation

"I contacted Millie to translate the Hotel Helvie into English, and I am truly very satisfied with the result.

Beyond delivering a high-quality translation, Millie went above and beyond what was asked of her: she identified several inconsistencies in the original French text and suggested relevant corrections that clearly improved the underlying content. Her suggestions were always well-founded and added real value to the project.
Millie is a pleasure to work with; she demonstrates great pragmatism and a solution-oriented approach that makes collaboration smooth and efficient. I highly recommend her for any translation or content revision project."

Sustainable Fashion Web Article

From Spanish into English

Source text: Moda circular: desafíos y oportunidades para una industria sostenible (2)

This article aims to educate consumers about how they can be part of the sustainable fashion movement. It was important to keep the tone welcoming so readers feel included and like they too can take on the advice being suggested.

1. Practical tips for promoting circular fashion

Despite the obstacles, it’s not just companies and authorities that can take concrete action to accelerate the transition towards a circular model for fashion, consumers can too. Here we’re going to share some best practices:

1.1 Prolong the life of your clothes

As a consumer, prioritise quality and durability over quantity. Look after your clothes by following the washing instructions, repair damaged clothes instead of throwing them away, and find new creative ways to use clothes (for example, converting old jeans into shorts or patches).

Extending the life cycle of clothing reduces the demand for new production and minimises waste.

1.2 Opt for second-hand fashion and other circular alternatives

Before buying something new, consider circular options. Explore second-hand shops, vintage markets and online clothes swapping and reselling platforms. You can also try rental services for special events instead of buying outfits that you’ll only wear once.

These actions don’t only save money, they also encourage a system where clothes are used to their fullest extent instead of sitting forgotten in a wardrobe or ending up in a landfill.

1.3 Support sustainable and local brands

Be informed when you make a purchase. Choose brands that adopt circular economy practices, such as offering a return program for used clothing, using recycled or organic materials, or designing timeless and repairable collections. You can also support local or independent designers, who often produce with less waste and under more ethical conditions.

By directing your spending towards responsible companies, you are encouraging the industry as a whole to transform itself. Every purchase is a vote for the type of practices you want to see in the fashion world.

1.4 Inform and educate others

Education is key for changing habits. Stay up to date with the impacts of the textile industry and circular solutions by reading blogs (like ecointeligencia) watching documentaries, and reading reports. Learn to identify possible cases of greenwashing so you don't fall for misleading marketing.

Share what you know with family and friends: start conversations about responsible consumption, organise clothes swaps with your friends and family, or simply lead by example.

The more people who understand the importance of circular fashion, the bigger the collective pressure for change.

Video Subtitles

French to English translation and subtitling of a TEDx Talk video about trust in environmental information.

I'm passionate about environmental issues and love working with causes that want to help the planet.

With this particular project, I translated the text and implemented the time codes. Good subtitles don't disturb the viewer, they simply help them get everything they need out of a video. My goal is always to make the subtitles as short and easy to digest as possible while making sure all the meaning and intention from the original audio is transferred.

"I had the opportunity to work with Ms. Gascoyne for the translation of a scientific text from French into English for a medical conference poster. Her work was of excellent quality, combining accuracy, appropriate scientific terminology, and clear, fluent writing. She demonstrated a strong ability to adapt the content to the standards of scientific communication while preserving the clarity of the original message. Communication was smooth, efficient, and professional throughout the process. The work was delivered within a short timeframe and met all expectations. I highly recommend Ms. Gascoyne for any translation work."
